5-0 out of 5 stars Standard of Care, June 12, 2001
Unfortunately, the previous reviews have failed to adequately address the role and purpose of this publication. Pocket Medicine, at least as I have used it, is the most concise and accurate reference for the practice of Internal Medicine in the United States as conducted at most teaching institutions today. It essentially covers all the major organ systems and disease processes as the most recent literature and textbooks recommend. Possession of this book will allow students, residents and staff to give patients the best care possible from evidence based medicine. You will shine on the wards and at morning report with this material. In fact, you could easily pass the Internal Medicine board certification exam if you knew everything in this book. For those practicing internal medicine from med students on up, it renders Scut Monkey, Ferre, Wash Manual, tarascon ICU books etc, all obsolete. Just look at the section about Swan Ganz monitoring -it's all there. Look at microscopic polyangiitis- it's all there. These are all real patients I've treated and this book works. More than half of the residents, students and staff in my hospital use it. Even surgeons own it. As medicine becomes more complex and scientifically based, publications such as this will be the only way to keep up. In fact, it's very inexpensive for what you get. One caution is that it may be too advanced for 3rd year med students with a poor knowledge base. A wash manual may be a simpler way to start. Unfortunately, those people who gave it a poor review have simply demonstrated their complete ignorance of the modern scientific practice of medicine. I simply hope they never treat any of my relatives!

4-0 out of 5 stars a "balanced" view from a former MGH housestaff..., January 6, 2003
As a former Mass General resident, I got a kick out of seeing our humble housestaff manual transformed into a glamorous pocket notebook. And apparently a somewhat controversial transformation, given some of the extremely negative reviews that have been posted. Ignoring the commercial aspects of this debate for a moment, I think the manual contains solid and comprehensive information that should serve any housestaff well (it certainly did for me for 3 years!). It probably does not contain enough explanation for most 3rd and 4th year medical students and, as such, should be used to supplement another manual (such as Washington or Ferri).

5-0 out of 5 stars IM Residency Must Have, January 8, 2006
I've used this book for three years and it is by far the best handbook. It provides a quick prep for attending rounds and morning report. I also have used it in preparation for the in service exam given each year. While obviously not an all encompassing text (and not intended to be) it is surprisingly complete. A good deal of information covered on the ABIM exam is actually in this book. My only gripe is the text - too small. Every IM intern and resident should carry this book and learn it in and out. Worth the 37 bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Book you need on the wards, August 11, 2003
I agree w/ many of the other reviews. This is a fantastic book for RESIDENTS, not medical students. It tends to gloss over basic information that any resident should already know. For that reason , the book is concise and has all the relevant info in order to manage patients. I also like the small notebook format, so I can add additional pages of info. I agree that this book does need a neuro/psych section to cover CVA/Seizures, delirium/dementia and ETOH withdrawal management. I've already worn my book out in the past two years and look forward to future editions. I have recommended this book to every intern I have supervised on the Wards...It is the only reference book I carry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Medicine Review, January 31, 2002
This small ring bound book is an excellent
resource for the most current diagnostic, prognostic,
and therapeutic information when evaluating many patients
during a limited time frame.Typically, the authors provide references after each subject, to which you can "quote"
to your senior resident or attending or make a dash to
the library, only to return with copies of an up to date journal
article to distribute on rounds while discussing your patient.
One suggestion I offer for improvement would be to include
a brief review of the basic neurological events that we are often
faced with on the wards, such as: CVA (ischemic/thrombotic), seizure, etiologies of dementia/delirium.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for review, but you will need to go deeper, May 7, 2006
Although I consider this to be one of the best handbooks for a quick superficial review, there are several other books which allow for more in depth learning while on the wards... such as The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine & of course... The Washington Manual. I would definitely carry around, or at least have handy, one of these while on the wards. If you get Pocket Med, make sure you get the new edition (2nd) as there is a new neurology section which is very nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Study results!, July 23, 2003
I see a lot of both good and poor reviews for this book. Personally, I like the book a lot. What it has that Ferri's doesn't is evidence-based medicine. Several major studies (PIOPED, and the like) are summarized. Yes, it is someone's notebook in fancy form. But it's cheap, it's small, and it's good. I found that it was too light on details when I was starting out, but once I felt a little more comfortable with my ability to come up with a basic differential, this was the book for me. It was great help for those long medicine write-ups, providing clinical research correlations. Now it is the only book that I carry in my pocket, full of micrographic notes that I have made from lectures, other books, etc. Ferri's isn't exactly pocket-friendly.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE pocket reference for residents, January 16, 2006
Read an UpToDate article and then read about that topic in Pocket Medicine and you will see 99% of the information from Uptodate but in concise format, including references to key articles. This book is packed with information. However, it's more in bullet and table format than in paragraph form, so not easy to read from if you're learning about a topic for the first time. More of a reference to the key points in each disease process assuming that you know a little about it beforehand. For that, you need 5 minute clinical consults or something similar. Also, the index could use some more cross-indexing, it can be tough to find subjects sometimes if you are in a hurry. It's available for handhelds too...haven't tried it yet though.

    2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing..., August 26, 2009
I agree with the last reviewer on all points. This book is quite disappointing. The content is superb but the presentation is horrendous. The publisher did a very poor job. Ringbinder is bulky, impossible to open quickly and flip through pages, pages are too thin, and font is ridiculously small. There are large portions of the pages left blank for "note taking" but ink bleeds through the "tissue paper" pages (You're lucky if you don't poke a hole through it first with the tip of the pen). The favorable reviews sound like suck ups. I give it 5 stars for excellent content, but subtract 3 stars for lack of usability in the real world

5-0 out of 5 stars Replaces all my other pocket guides!, January 22, 2008
Pocket Medicine is an outstanding quick reference, covering an astonishing amount of information in a small notebook.

During spare moments, I can review the well-designed chapters. When I need a reference, the facts are laid out in a clear and logical format, and referenced to journals and studies where appropriate.

A more complete index is the one thing I would add to this book, but that's a small quibble. It's easy enough to add notations to the back of the book, or add a few extra pages (the binder takes standard six-ring refills, such as FiloFax Personal pages).

My pockets are lighter since I found Pocket Medicine. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Understanding the role of fascia in healthy movement and postural distortion is of vital importance to bodyworkers and movement therapists. Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual and Movement Therapists presents a unique 'whole systems' view of myofascial/locomotor anatomy in which the bodywide connections among the muscles within the fascial net are described in detail for the first time. Using the metaphor of railway or train lines, Myers explains how patterns of strain communicate through the myofascial 'webbing', contributing to postural compensation and movement stability. Written in a style that makes it easy to understand and apply, Anatomy Trains provides an accessible and comprehensive explanation of the anatomy and function of the myofascial system in the body. The DVD ROM in the back of the book contains video of techniques, Anatomy Trains-based dissections and computer animations of the myofascial meridian lines.

includes full-colour illustrations of 11 myofascial meridians and the rules for discovering other meridians
. uses numerous full colour charts and drawings to detail the muscular and fascial structures involved in the meridians
. presents information on assessment of structural and movement patterns and gives related application to manual therapy and movement education
. provides a selection of techniques from the library of structural integration
. includes an introduction to the fascial system as a whole, with points-of-view and the latest research findings on the fascial system's responses
. offers a fun approach to learning essential structural anatomy, comparing the connective tissue system to a railway network
. video material on the accompanying DVD ROM to visually present the anatomy as described in the book.

    Full colour throughout
    . New design and layout
. 140 New full colour figures including dissection photographs and client photos
. DVD ROM in back of book
. A new appendices on 'Structural integration' and 'Myofascial meridians and oriental medicine'
. New posters to be published simultaneously.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A RNs review from a patient/practioner's prospective, March 27, 2003
Wow! I thought I'd ordered the wrong book for my needs, which are 1.more knowledge of the process of myofascial release and 2. more understanding of places/points of anatomy. It has been a long while since I've been in school and a long time since I worked at a top teaching hospital in the Bay area in California.

I read a few paragraphs, taking care not to damage the book, because I thought I'd probably return it. HOWEVER, after a few sentences I was immediately caught up in the beauty and clarity of this work. NEVER has physiology been made so interesting. Finally, I understand so many things that were just a jumble of memorized facts in preparation for exams. This book has rekindled my love of physiology and is even undoing my dislike of anatomy. Anatomy didn't make sense to me - it was boring - it was memorization. Now I am understanding why my body is so damaged from the stresses I subject it to, but better, I understand how I can undo some damage and prevent more.

I worked on a Sports Medicine unit where famous athletes came for surgery. So much surgery can be avoided with corrective measures for chronic stressors. The medical community needs to be aware of this important material.

So bravo for such a readable work. What depth of historial findings, beautiful graphics, excellent grammar and text. I feel as though I'm in school again, but this time it is for pleasure and for pain relief.

After a few pages I tried to find out more about the author and was surprised not to see a Ph.D. by his name, although I'm not sure a Ph.D. makes one any wiser.

I totally concur with the first review.

Don't buy this book if you are looking for a simple, trendy approach to bodywork. This is so much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of true genius, and lots of sweat, October 5, 2001
I am a Board Certified MD Neurologist, with osteopathic training, a Yoga Practitioner of 25 years, and have been teaching Yoga in the Ashtanga and Iyengar styles for 10 of those years. I was familiar with Tom Myers' work for some time. Needless to say I was awaiting this book's release with an anticipation that was not disappointed.

Myers is that rare bird who can convey his insights in a way that is not only accessible but also enjoyable. As is often the case, the revelations in his book (and all of his previous articles) will, I predict, have a profound effect in the Medicine of the XXI century, and have come from "outside" the mainstream of the profession.

The style is agile and yet precise (I particularly enjoy his command of Latin) The book's design is ideal both for straight-through reading and for focusing on particular interests the reader (manual therapist, yoga instructor or practitioner, etc) may have. The illustrations are awesome (to use that tired adjective, for once, in its true etymological sense) although my edition lacked the one facing page 93 (Superficial Front Line) due no doubt to a printing snafu.

The basic idea, that tensegrity ()tension integrity) patterns and structures undergird function at a macroscopic level, while not new, is presented here with clarity, scientific and anatomical rigor, and esthetic sense. It is, above all a practical book, a veritable "Instruction Manual for the Human Body" whether our own or that of the fortunate human that is a reader's cliant.

The few errata (Myers should have specified that piezoelectricity is a property of some materials, having to do with their molecular conformation and disposition; specific glial cells are called "oligodendrocytes" not "oligodendrytes"; the mesoderm, rather that the endoderm, gives origin to endothelial cells in page 36) are minor, and do not detract at all from the overall quality of this work.

I imagine that Myers is already hard at work, perhaps taking this to the next level of visceral manipulation, all the way (who knows) to the manipulation of cytoskeletal and trans-cellular elements. There again, yogis and yoginis have been manipulating microtubules and integrins for millennia...

Make no mistake, there is nothing "New-Agey" or "woo-woo" about this book, though. It is as concrete, flesh, blood and sinew as they come. I could not recommend it more heartily.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Bodyworker's Bible, August 26, 2004
Having had significant recent exposure to Tom and his school, I would like to add my cudos. The writing is supurb and entertaining. Presentations are clear, concise, and his writing is as animated as any I have ever read.

I believe that this book was written for bodyworkers to explain the dynamics of the myofascial system and how it may be manipulated to help correct improper joint and connective tissue alignment. His metaphor "anatomy trains" is a beautiful description of the layers of contiguous or nearly contiguous myofascial layers that run along the human form.

His use of a variety of illustrations old and new is amazing. I realize that he has a vast personal library so it is easy to see where spent many hours gathering just the right images that conveyed exactly what he wanted to say.

This should be rightly called a "reference textbook" and sit close to your Netter or Clemente.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New, Global View of the body, September 12, 2005
I have been a professional body therapist since 1979. Anatomy Trains is one of the best books I have seen in my entire career spanning 36 years. This is a great book for all kinds of body therapy styles and forms. The book clearly states and I agree that a detailed knowledge of human anatomy is necessary to follow and understand the book.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!, November 26, 2003
Probably the most brilliant piece of work in 500 years of anatomy studies. You will never think of the body in the same way ever again. HIGHLY recommended!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, December 2, 2006
I am a yoga teacher who has been interested in myofascial meridians without knowing it! I have been exploring Kundalini Yoga which tends to get into the tissues to release patterns of tension. The information in this book was just what I needed to further my studies.

This book does a great job of explaining the fascia along with excellent exercises for release.

This book may be a difficult read for a lay person but if you are in any kind of movement therapy work - this is a must!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing., October 2, 2006
As I read this book, I get the "eureka!"-feeling at nearly every turn of page. It all seems so logical when Myers lays it out. This book has really sparked my interest for Structural Integration therapy and I am going to order all of the Anatomy Trains DVDs - the first three are already on the way. I can also heartily recommend Ida P. Rolf's books on Structural Integration - she's the originator and (or should that be "but") is easily understood, just like Myers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital importance for movement therapists, March 18, 2007
Anatomy Trains is an accesible and comprehensive overview of the myofascial system of the body. This key to understanding the role of fascia in healthy movement should be required reading of anyone who works in the bodywork field.
It may be a bit ponderous to someone who is more physically inclined but do not be put off. You will find you absorb much through just forging through as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has taken my deep tissue treatments to the next level., January 9, 2007
Reading Tom Myers book Anatomy Trains has taken my deep tissue treatments to the next level. This book combined with a hands-on class (Structural Integration continuing education) and deep tissue videos (Art Riggs) are making my clients very happy!
Myer's explanations are clear and concise.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Pimpin' ain't easy..., July 28, 2006
But Surgical Recall makes it easier. Basically, people get Recall for two reasons: 1) they're not interested in surgery but have to rotate and do well in it or 2) they're genuinely interested in surgery.

For med students just needing to get by, this partly meets your needs. This is not a text. The short Q&A format does not lend itself to thorough reading, it does not necessarliy flow, and it's not always easy to correlate concepts. It's good for reading before an operation for when the surgeon asks you questions ('pimping'). It's effective for a cram session before an exam/quiz as it addresses common issues. Reading Recall straight through, however, is not easy due to the format and length (800 pages). If you like flash-card style presentations, then Recall is great. If you don't, consider First Aid for Surgery, Surgery Secrets, or Lawrence's Essentials (I personally can't stand Lawrence).

For those looking into surgery, this book represents the fundamentals you NEED to know cold. The Q&A format basically simulates an attending or chief quizzing you during rounds or conference. The max amount of potassium you can give through a central line? It's not a thrilling concept, but it's something you'll ask yourself as an intern, and if you don't, a higher level will do it for you. This book has saved my butt a number of times on a surgery rotation. Aside from the essentials of preop and postop care, Recall also has specific questions you might have during an operation. Once again, these are high yield. The keys to performing a cholecystectomy are dead on (*be warned, their definition of the cystic triangle is a little goofy- personally was burned on that). There's also a few pictures going over basic anatomy. This is also one of the few books aimed at students which goes over surgical instruments and technique.

Overall, a great buy if you're into surgery, but a questionable purchase if you don't like the format and aren't interested in surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't start your surgery rotation without it!, March 28, 2001
This is *the* book to have during your surgery rotation. It is surprisingly thorough for its size. It covers all the questions you will get on rounds, in the OR, and in your exams. It even has some pictures and diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best single source of info you'll find on any clerkship, August 25, 2002
They'll tell you that you need to read a surgery textbook in addition to Recall, but I (who am generally a reader) found that to be flat out untrue. I was skeptical of Recall, but I am a convert. I checked out Lawrence, Sabiston, and NMS, and found them all to be too 'wordy'. When you only have a few minutes to spare here and there, you don't want to waste precious reading time on pretty prose, you need the facts, unadorned. That's what Recall will give you. I really meant to be good and read an actual text, but ran out of time. So I can tell you from experience that if you know Surgical Recall well, it will be enough (with a little sleep the night before) to kick butt on the NBME shelf exam, or whatever exam y'all use. Reduce the pain (and expense) of your surgery rotation -- buy this book. It's all you really need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you're getting pimped at rounds, but...., February 18, 2000
Surgical Recall is great for those "pimp" questions at rounds and actually not bad for oral and written exams. However, to truly get the most out of a surgery rotation (even if you're not a surgical hopeful), you should read a unified text rather than a handbook of tidbits and pearls. That said, make sure you get this book because the authors knows how to zero you in on the important HIGHLIGHTS. Fill in the blanks with a great text (Not Lawerance! I used Sabiston and the baby Sabiston) and you'll shine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surgical recall review, November 9, 2003
The one thing that other reviews fail to mention - don't buy the 3rd edition (2002) unless someone else is paying for it - like the military. The 2nd edition (1998) can be found at places like half.com and used through Amazon at less than $10 including shipping. The differences between the 2 editions is minimal - so many of these medical books are only updated to ensure higher sales - students are always worried that they are buying out of date information and so will pay the extra.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you need to do well on your surgery rotation., October 1, 1999
Your attendings will want you to read some fat surgery text, but honestly you just don't have the time. Luckily, almost everything that you as a 3rd year medical student ought to know about surgery is in this book, in a concise and enjoyable format. Carry it with you, read it every chance you get, especially the couple of pages relevant to your patient's case before you scrub in. If you master this book, particularly the 300 pages or so on general (as opposed to specialty) surgery, you will be well prepared for the National Board and any oral exam you school may have you take. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the wards and the NBME shelf, September 8, 2006
This is a must have during surgery clerkships. It's broken down into concise chapters that can quickly be reviewed (5-10 minutes) before a case or a conference. For example, we had a right hepatic lobectomy case on a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. I spent about 20 minutes in the physicians locker room reviewing the liver chapters before the case. In surgery, I was easily able to answer nearly all questions from the staff surgeon and the chief resident. Most pimp questions can be found in this book. This book definitely gives you an edge on the clerkship. It provides fast access to many pertinent concepts that you'll need day in and day out on the wards, in the SICU and in the OR. Many pocket textbooks are just dead weight in your coat. This one is actually very useful.

Also, recall is a good resource for studying for the Surgery Shelf exam. Much of the exam is medicine, not surgery. As a result, the basic reveiew of physiologic and IM concepts in recall were helpful in preparation for the shelf exam.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book, August 17, 2001
It's nice and concise, but not comprehensive by any means. I would suggest the Niederhuber textbook on general surgery (it's much easier reading than the Lawrence book, in my opinion, but a bit longer) and then use this as a pocket reference, especially if you need to find just a line on something fast. Nice section on practical stuff, e.g., the various retractors, sutures, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surgical Recall: The Only Source Needed to Succeed, August 11, 2000
Just finished my 3rd year surgical clerkship, the first of the year. I am one of those middle-of-the-pack medical students, and this little gem of a book earned me Honors in arguably the most difficult clerkship. Read it front to back and know it well. You will shine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Surgery rotation., May 20, 2006
If you read this + the surgery blueprints book, all you need for a medical school surgery rotation shelf exam. If you want more detail, the next step up is the "Essentials of General Surgery" book. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A cornucopia of exercises., January 16, 2008
I like two things about this book. The first is that it is very thorough and complete. Exercises, both stretching and strengthening, are included for basically every major muscle group or extremity motion. Furthermore, the book is divided up well enough that you can find what you're looking for fast.

Secondly, I like the fact that this book is evidence-based, meaning that it backs up what it suggests with references from the scientific literature. In fact, it's so good that it can be a great place to start a literature search from.

Know too that this book is mainly written for people who have some medical background of sorts, so if you're just an average reader looking for some workout exercises, this probably isn't your book. Rather, I feel like the book is better suited for athletic trainers, personal trainiers, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, massage therapists, and so on. Practitioners looking for more info on the shoulder might also want to check out Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff -for more detailed ex's on rotator cuff tear prevention and rehabilitation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book, October 29, 2000
I got this book years ago in an earlier edition in Physical therapy school. I found it very helpful since it is full of ideas for treatment and exercises for some different diagnoses. Of course, I used it a lot in school in a few courses, it was invaluable in the clinic when I was doing a lot of outpatient orthopaedic patients. Since I am now doing inpatient acute patients I have rarely used this book, but I still have it as a reference because you never know when it may be useful to brush up on. I recommend that you get this book if you are in school or think that clinical ortho patients are your niche.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, September 29, 2000
This is an excellent manual, covering many essential topics in a well-organized style. Techniques are clearly explained and often are accompanied by a diagram. The large, sturdy spiral makes the book easy to use. Although the pages are a little thin and may leak through with an ordinary highlighter, they are certainly thick enough to easily be underlined with a colored pen or pencil. This book has become my essential, often-consulted reference for therapeutic exercise techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, June 7, 2006
As a personal trainer, I am often faced with clients who have just finished rehabilitation in some form or another. This book allows me to understand the possible causes and implications of their concern being addressed. This is an excellent source describing the progressions and stages of rehabilitation. Detailed information and illustrations are included to cover post-operative, clinition (or machine) assisted motion, self induced motion, and maintenance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book adn a MUST HAVE for any one in PT pratice, March 27, 2004
I use this book in my physical therapy pratice all the time. It's a great quick refrence book. Any student PT or PTA should get this book if its required or not. It had wonderful pictures and great directions. It's very helpful in understanding therapudic exercise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book, December 28, 1999
Very comprehensive, happy that this edition is light in weight but heavy on good information. Nearly 800 pages in length.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good foundation book, November 12, 2001
This is a good book for beginning students of therapeutic exercise and mobilization techniques. It gives the basic foundation of the treatments and the sound reasoning behind it. It is a good book to have for P.T. and A.T.C. students just starting out in their career and a good reference book once out in the working field.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect, August 23, 2008
I am quite athletic and injured some muscles/tendons. I was in physical therapy and wanted to know more about why specific exercises were helping more than I had expected. This is a perfect book for the aging athlete who will start getting more and more minor problems from wear and tear, that seem to take longer and longer to heal. This book describes quite clearly and completely activies that help both in prevention and recovery. The knowledge it contains will help anyone heal as quickly as possible and avoid reinjury.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cutting corners, March 9, 1998
The 3rd ed. is a poor quality text. It is bound as a spiral and is printed on thin (practically transparent), low quality paper.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, December 16, 2008
I am a PTA (physical therapist assistant) student and also a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. I bought this book because it looked very interesting and helpful for all three. I was thrilled to get it, there is so much information, all research-backed. An added bonus is that it is on my book list for next quarter. I've also recently learned that one of the authors, Carol Kisner, is often quoted for her cutting edge research. So while I haven't read the book cover to cover yet, it looks very good. It is important to know that information on exercise - therapeutic or otherwise is backed by current research - you don't want to pass on ineffective or dangerous techniques to your clients, patients, students or anyone else who puts their trust in you. ... Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology, Fourth Edition enables rapid review and assimilation of large amounts of complex information about the essentials of medical pharmacology. Clear, sequential pictures of mechanisms of action actually show students how drugs work, instead of just telling them. As in previous editions, the book features an outline format, over 500 full-color illustrations, cross-references to other volumes in the series, and over 125 review questions. Content has been thoroughly updated, and a new chapter covers toxicology.

New to this edition will be a companion Website containing all of the illustrations, fully searchable text, and an interactive question bank.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST! Pharm book around, December 17, 2001
I used this book to study for my second year pharm class, and it has to be one of the best medical texts I have used so fair. It is an excellent balance between not enough info, aka ridiculously simple, and sweet jesus Katzung! It is concise, well organized, and has helpful pictures. I can't stress enough that if you are in the market for a pharm book THIS IS THE ONE!!!!!!!!! You will thank me later as you get your H in pharm!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations but factual errors, July 29, 2007
Please be advised that though you may find the illustrations helpful and entertaining, some of descriptive pharmacology contains fatal errors. For example, on page 119:

"Cocaine can induce seizures as well as fatal cardiac arrythmias. IV diazepam and propanolol may be required to control cocaine-induced seizures and cardiac arrythmias."

Propanolol is CONTRAINDICATED in cocaine-induced cardiac arrythmias because of coronary artery vasoconstriction. Responsible health-care providers need to know this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pharmacology Review, November 17, 2000
This book is really superb. I've been using it since the second medical year. One of the best features of this book is its black-and-white illustrations which make your life easy. The info are presented in an outline format for quick reading. It's concise and excellent for review (and for the first time) study! It contains some questions at the end of each chapter. Actually, this is what you need to know for examination purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST PHARMACOLOGY BOOK IN THE WORLD, September 30, 1997

If you are looking for an easy to read, well illustrated book for your pharmacology studies,THEN STOP LOOKING!!!

This is the book for the dynamic reader who likes:
    Short and concise chapters.
Selfassesment questions by the end of every topic
    Perfect illustrations
Maximum input with minimum of timeloss

If less reading and lots of quick learning sounds good to your ears, then don't look any further. Mark my words, this is the best "PHARMACOLOGY-TEACHER" in my town and yours.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not enough to be your sole Pharm source, June 12, 2004
I used this text to prepair for the boards, having already read Katzung's Pharmacology in class. This is a concise book, uniform, with many illustrations (many of them however could easily be omitted, since they simply present drug adverse effects graphically), and does a good job in selecting the prototypical drugs from each class. It could be a lot more complete in the section on CNS pharmacology, and on drugs for heart failure and hypertension (for example, it is stated that beta-blockers are contraindicated in heart failure, whereas it is well-known that this kind of drugs is essential for reducing mortality and hospitalizations in these patients). I particularly liked the section on antimicrobial chemotherapy, another high-yield topic for the boards. I have a positive overall impression of the book, but I found myself consulting Katzung more than often; also, it does not compare to the clearly superior Lippincott title on Biochemistry (keep in mind however than biochemistry lends itself much more easily to illustrated presentations than pharmacology). It will help you, but in order to top the exams, you will need an additional resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pharm in text, August 12, 2004
For most medical students, pharmacology is just route memorization. This book does a great deal to let you understand the mechanism of action and indications for the major drugs. By no means is this book to be substituted for your pharmacology textbook but it perfect to read as a companion to your textbook and lecture. Goes through the high yield material and allows you to know what is important for your test.
I do not recommend this book for USMLE, I think it is too big and detailed. I think you need to stick with a book that allows you to cram. What i would suggest is to read the pharmacology section of First Aid.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Lippincott's Pharmacology, February 18, 2007
An excellent overview of commonly used drugs, organized meaningfully and with (generally) useful illustrations. I bought it for Step 1 board studying, but if you're in medical school, buy this your first year - it's an excellent reference and I wish I had had this when I was going through my core classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review book, great pictures and summaries, February 25, 1998
As a medical student studying pharmacology for class and for the USMLE, I have found this book to be very helpful. It makes a good reference as well as a good review book. The pictures are very helpful, and the text summarizes the most important information. They include many drugs with concise descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars LIPPINCOTT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PATIENT TEACHER, December 8, 2002
The Lippincott's scientific/medical series need no introduction. They have already carved their names with pride. Almost every book in this group have captured the hearts and souls of students. They are affordable as well!
Now, with hundreds of figures and charts, this one, the "Lippincott's Illustrative Reviews: Pharmacology" is truly illustrated. It has the qualities that reminds me of the "Basic & Clinical Pharmacology", (which was edited by Bertram Katzung). I love the simplicity of this book. It is a patient teacher. Very straightforward! It has that step-by-step approach that complex pharmacological and biochemical texts often overlook.
I have nothing to complain about this book; although I understand the feelings of my colleagues who accuse it of not being versatile enough as to serve as a major reference source.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, but Long and with Errors, August 13, 2007
I am a third year medical student and purchased this book as a first year to study for board exams. This book has pretty pictures, but over-simplifies and does not contain all the information that is in the board exams. Also, I found several inaccuracies in the text. As boards approached, I purchased Katzung and Trevor's Clinical Pharmacology, which is excellent, with much better questions, and all the important details. Don't be discouraged by the length, it is a fast read and will prepare you very well for boards. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book, July 29, 2007
This book is really useful and contains a great deal of information regarding everything an IM student/resident would like to know. It's very well written, clear and concise. It has a big drawback though: it is big and heavy enough for not being comfortably put in your pocket, since it is considered a pocket book. If this is not a disadvantage for you it is a perfect companion for quick refence in theoretical and some practical stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, July 30, 2008
The Washington Manual is like a mini-DiPiro's. It is especially great because it is small enough to be carried in a backpack without the extra weight. The material inside is not too general yet not too overwhelming. Being a pharmacist that have been out of school for a few years, it is a great review of disease states. The book covers the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy for each disease state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, July 22, 2008
I've had the PDA version of this book's 31st edition and I liked so much that when the 32nd edition came out I could not resist to buy the actual book. It is a great book for a quick review of many topics. I personally complement some of the topics with UptoDate and works great.

1-0 out of 5 stars Online version is impossible to download, June 8, 2010
To download the online version you first have to register with Skyscape for their marketing purposes, and then add their program to your device -- mine is an iPhone. You then run their program on your iPhone and download the WM from there. The problem is that the program on the iPhone crashes every time I try to enter my email (user name) - never even get to enter my password so have never actually used the program, which makes it impossible to download the mobile copy of the Washington Manual I THOUGHT I had purchased. Still have the paper copy, though, but that's not what I paid for. DO NOT BUY the Washington Manual for its online version until Skyscape posts a revision higher than 1.16.19, which is where the problem is. Even then, test Skyscape out on your device before you buy the Manual to be sure it works, if the online version is important to you.

    - More dosing tables would have been handy to serve as a quicker reference, rather than having to dig through paragraphs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible anatomy text, January 28, 2010
Clinically Oriented Anatomy is, without a doubt, the best anatomy text I have come across thus far. And at this point, I've got a shelf full of anatomy books. The writing is very clear and in nearly every passage, easy to follow. Sometimes the descriptions get a bit confusing if you aren't comfortable yet with anatomical orientation (superomedial, aborad, etc) but that will come with any anatomy text - it's part of the process of learning anatomy. The passages are far more easy to read than Gray's Anatomy for Students, and the blue box clinical correlates and sectional summaries do an excellent job tying things together. At the end of a given section, I always find myself coming away with a very solid understanding of the material I've just read.

It has been mentioned in other comments that the illustrations are not the best. And I agree with that. But this is a text, not an atlas, and therein lies the difference. The illustrations are meant to provide general orientation and understanding. The illustrations in Gray's Anatomy for Students are generally better than in this book, but they pale in comparison to any of the real atlases out there in content and detail. For true details and spatial comprehension, you need a real atlas. I'm preferential to Thieme for illustrations (the neurovasculature illustrations are just incredible) and Rohen for photographic images.

Combine a great text with one or two great atlases. That's the only way to truly learn anatomy.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Honest Opinion (2.5 really), April 30, 2009
I am not a big fan of this textbook.
Nothing was concise, things were confusing.
If you have to know the branches of the arteries and nerves, it'll be impossible to use this book.
Get something like Thieme or BRS, more to the point (especially BRS). Pictures weren't that great either (granted its no sobotta, but still)
It is however still "clinically oriented" so depends on the university and their teachings.
I find it impossible to memorize anything from this or even make good notes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great, August 16, 2010
I don't see how this book has almost five stars. In my first semester med school anatomy class everyone had this textbook (as it was recommended by the school). After the first month maybe 2 students still used it (out of 100 students). If you already know your anatomy and have a strong background, then this book will be great. If you are new to the game then all you really need is the gray's students edition for the introduction, the netters atlas for clarification, and the brs for details.

Dont be fooled by the whole 'clinically oriented' part, it's not as great as you think. The brs will explain these same fractures/diseases much faster and clearer...on top of that the brs online aspect supplies MANY more questions. AVOID.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best anatomy textbook, August 25, 2009
If you have time, you should read this textbook in order to completely understand clinical anatomy. If you don't have time (like most of us), then the blue boxes are indispensable. The pictures throughout the text are a great complement to Netter's atlas. Great text!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook!, September 16, 2009
This book is very thorough with detailed pictures and explanations. It is well worth the money. I also bought Netter's, which is amazing, but is only pictures, no text. If you have little money, buy this one, not both and certainly not just Netter's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book with nice illustrations, August 21, 2009
Good book with nice illustrations. Minor oversight on a few illustrations (EX: where the Maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve exits the visocranium).

2-0 out of 5 stars What edition is this again???, August 31, 2009
There are so many typos and mislabeled figures in this textbook that I would definitely not recommend it. I think Gray's Anatomy for Students does not have nearly as many serious typos, in addition, it has much better figures for assisting with conceptual understanding.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clinically Oriented Anatomy, August 18, 2010
One of the most hated books by students in my med school. There is a lot of pictures missing for important systems. This books throws at you a lot of detail (which you don't need to know) and fails to provide the student with a big picture. Unless you are in love with anatomy and planning to study it for the fun of it, don't buy it. There are other better books out there. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised, May 27, 2010
I received this book yesterday and I was quite anxious to open it and start reviewing. I intend to use it for the PANRE. I was disappointed in the depth of the explaination of the conditions as well as treatments. The depth of information was not very good. The explanation of treatments for requiring antibiotic care was poor. Obviously, an infection is treated with an antibiotic. I would expect that the first line, second and third choices for antibiotic care would be presented here. They were not. As an ortho PA I was hopeful to see and review primary treatments for primary care diagnosises. The ortho section was abysmal. I will not even comment. I did compare this text to my old Auth text that I used for the PANCE and it lists antibiotic treatments where this text does not and its depth and breadth, I felt, was better. I think that is a very important detail especially for PAs that don't routinely see primary care problems. I am considering the new additions of Auth's review book and Van Rhee's as well, for the PANRE.

    3-0 out of 5 stars So-So, July 3, 2010
I read the reviews before purchasing this book and found the reviews to be accurate. I have found the book rarely discusses the disease or condition in any type of depth. Also the treatment discussion is lacking. Truthfully I bought this book for questions, hoping they are the most current and will help me when recertifying.

3-0 out of 5 stars I did not like it, October 17, 2010
A lot is made of the fact that this was written with the cooperation of the AAPA and PAEA. Its a great selling tool, but this book does not give you the "details "to do well on the boards. I have been practicing as a P.A for 13 years I passed my PANCE in the top 5 % and my first PANRE in the top 1%. I just retook my 2nd PANRE and have not recieved my score yet but this book did not help it, I can tell you that. Fortunately, I didn't use this book soley for the test and that is my saving grace. The best thing about the book was the pre and post test, yet neither one simulated the PANRE well. The PANRE was much harder!! then the questions in this book.
To be fair both the PANCE and PANRE change from test to test so I could have just had a harder test this cycle, however when I think back on the two previous tests, I don't think this would have been a great book to use for either one of them. Why? The boards love most common ,least common symptom or sign type questions. They also like to test you about subtle differences between simularly presenting diseases. This - for the most part- dosen't give you that info. It lists the symptoms/signs randomly so you could know everything in it and still do poorly.
This was the first and last time I will use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help, July 20, 2010
I think that it really helped me. I like the format of it, as it was concise and to the point. Not full of hyperbole. I guess we will see in the next 1.5 weeks when I get my results. I certainly recommend it, and the fact that it is recommended by AAPA helped a lot in choosing this over the many others available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Has new Pediatrics and Geriatrics chapters, dont use alone though, June 23, 2010
The newer edition AAPA book is good, but as one of the reviews stated below, some of the treatments are very general and generically addressed. Most of the treatments listed are sufficient, but I would DEFINITELY use another resource for treatments along with this review book for both PANCE and PANRE. The good points are additional Pediatric and Geriatric chapters, both lacking in previous editions, and somewhat updated Asthma charts. Again, treatments listed failed to impress. Topics missing would be a Pharmacology/Antiobiotic/Toxicology chapter, as that would certainly help. Overall, it covers most of the content blueprint for the exam and in a concise (albeit sometimes too concise)fashion, but certainly needs supplemental material for treatments. *The ONLINE QUESTIONS and pre/post exam questions are VERY HELPFUL and are a must-do!*

I got an earlier edition of this book in Physical Therapy school and it was invaluable in teaching the finer points of goniometry. I constantly used it as a source of information, until I became comfortable with measuring joint range of motion. Since I am now working in the inpatient arena, I mostly repeatedly measure knees, but refer back to it when I need to brush up on another joint. It has clear pictures and overall is a great reference book for anyone who has to evaluate joint ranges of motion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise review of neuroanatomy, December 7, 2002
This is a great little book! I used it in medical school, and now that I'm a neurology resident, I *still* use it. Has enough depth to be useful, but not overwhelming. Easy to read. Tends to cover the pimpable/testable highlights. Good summary tables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it for Step I 'cause First Aid doesn't cut it, September 27, 2005
First Aid is money for most subjects, but it's weak on neuro. This book is a very good balance between too little and too much for this overwhelming subject. The High Yield series keeps improving in quality, and in the newest edition is even better at showing clinical scenarios and integrating other subjects like pathology or physiology (I used an older version and it's still pretty good, though).

I would like to say this is great for course work, but at least at my school they tended to test on obscure minituae hard to find anywhere.

This is all you should need for Step, which does feature a decent dose of neuro (about 10, more like 20 questions). It's also very good at developing as essential foundation of knowledge applicable for future use, which sometimes gets lost when scrambling to cram for course exams.

My big qualm is the pricing. It's a thin book, not a main text. Use the library, borrow it from a friend, split the cost, etc. High Yield makes a nice line of books but they need to trim prices for medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for USMLE review, March 28, 2001
This is the book for Step 1 USMLE review. It covers all the essential details of this heavily tested subject. Must be coupled with an atlas since recognizing gross pictures and as well as comfort with imaging is vital for the USMLE. For coursework, it is advisable to use a more substantial book. Neuroanatomy is a tough subject that cannot be crammed. It is essential to lay down a strong base during the semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have, June 7, 2004
This book has all the neuroanatomy and associated clinical scenarios that I was tested on for Step 1. The mini atlas of brain anatomy is a guaranteed question. The clinical info about brain/brainstem/spinal cord injuries is also covered very well in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars How could you understand neuroanatomy without it?, September 17, 2000
Neuroanatomy is a new language. It's by far the most difficult class of the first year of medical school. This book will get you through. It's full of figures and outlines that allow you to hammer home the simple stuff, so that the foundation will be laid for the harder stuff they throw at you in the classroom and on your exams. It's all you need for the USMLE step 1. If you want to be successful, buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars good review if you have a good foundation, March 2, 2002
This is a good book for people who need to review for the boards and have a good foundation of neuroanatomy. If you don't have solid footing the lack of explanations might confuse you. On the other hand it is quite concise so it is easy to get through.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for step 1., October 5, 2004
This is an excellent book and it's really all you need to prepare for your step 1. I used this book and answered every single question on neuro correctly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book To Use in Course and Board Exams, September 9, 2004
This book is very high yield and helped me ace the class and do really well on the board exam. One thing that this book doesnt have that is on the NBME is headaches, sleep disorders, and cell death. Other than that it has everything u need to ace the class. I highly recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Neuroanatomy Review, November 17, 2000
This book is amazing!! I advise every medical student to buy it as soon as you read this, it's really worth it! It's concise and well organized. It extracts the most important info on each topic, supported by many diagrams & imaging techniques which are clear & stick in your memory. When the author deals with a clinical relevance (e.g. a disease), he explains its pathophysiology which helps you to understand rather than memorize it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for Step 1, January 2, 2008
The USMLE has become increasingly focused on neuro over the past few years, and First Aid has become more and more inadequate with respect to neuro. This book is a great way to prepare for the neuro questions on Step 1. It's a slender book and is thus a very quick read --- heck, I'm a slow reader and finished it in 2.5 days. At the beginning of the book are several images of brain sections, with arrows pointing to the most important structures. The book also has radiologic images (MRA, MRI, CT) which were very helpful for me when I took Step 1 --- actually, I remember having 3 distinct questions with an accompanying MRA image. The book does a good job of explaining the basic function/organization of the different parts of the brain in a concise manner. There were a few sections that I thought were a little too detailed for Step 1 --- especially the cerebellum section. Overall, though, it's a wonderful book and it will help you to nail the neuro questions on the USMLE. ... Read more

This is a very informative reference. I am a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy and I see a wide variety of patients on a daily basis. This guide helps me out in performing the correct exams or tests. It also helps the doctor out when he reads my write up. This allows less time for the patient in medical, less time for the doctor, so he doesn't have to see the patient. It also helps me out when a patient is presented to medical with a complaint that I have not heard of or seen yet. I have learned so much more with this book. Thank You and if you are in the medical field and see patients like I do, I recommend this book.

    4-0 out of 5 stars EASY-TO-COMPREHEND POCKET GUIDE, March 30, 2003
This "Bates' Pocket Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking" is an easy-to-comprehend manual which was structured in a way that should meet the needs of both doctors and nurses. The information contained in this book are simple and straightforward; and just like the complete edition, they included paediatric coverage. The chapters of this book examined both morphological and physiological abnormalities and/or irregularities. They included several illustrative charts and tables, which facilitate comparative analyses of clinical data.
If appropriately adhered to, the supervisory procedures outlined in this book would assist medics in making correct evaluation of each case they encounter. Also worth pointing out, is the way the book paid attention to drug administration.
In all, this is a good medical adviser, which inexperienced medics should have in their lab-coat pockets.

Since a few of the other reviews are too over-the-top to take seriously, I thought I would add my comments: It's nice 'cause it fits in your pocket, & it's nice cause it has lots of the Bates pictures in it. Unfortunately, it includes a lot of basic text at the expense of the more uncommon presentations and PE tests. I'm in the middle of my PA rotation year and I already ignore this book most of the time for that reason. 5-0 out of 5 stars The title doesn't lie!, May 12, 2003
A colleague recommended this book to me after I lamented that Dubin's competing text was amusing and easy to understand, but didn't really foster any permanent functional understanding of EKGs. Like Dubin's text, Thaler's EKG Book takes a leisurely approach to deconstructing the EKG. However, Thaler's text is a much more functional guide, offering better explanations in a more comprehensive approach to interpreting EKGs. Thaler's text works not only because it is easy to understand, but also because it provides more clinical scenarios, and has a more complete discussion of a wide variety of abnormal EKGs. This book is far superior to Dubin's. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far superior to Dubin's book, August 25, 2005
For years, professors, clinical instructors, and residents told me all I ever needed to known to analyze EKGs was Dubin's book. Despite reading it over and over again, I still struggled when it came time to interpret EKGs during rounds. I realized this was because Dubin's book favors rote memorization over understanding. The fill in the blank, repetitive structure actually makes retaining information difficult because it doesn't really teach you anything. Thaler's book, on the other hand, successfully manages to remain informal while teaching the concepts behind EKG analysis. I bought this book on the recommendation of a fellow intern who was having the same difficulties. One read through and I felt that years were wasted struggling with Dubin. Don't waste time or money on Dubin's ridiculous approach. Thaler's book will actually teach you what you need to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drop that Dull Dubin!, December 13, 2004
It's well worth the time and expense to read this book in addition to the assigned Dubin. Thaler's text is clearly written, cleanly laid out, and easy to follow (no cutesy fill-in-the-blanks here). The publisher deserves a lot of credit for careful editing and an elegant, logical layout.

Thaler presents each topic in a concise paragraph or two, with lots of white space for notes. Criteria are given in straightworward lists, and are far easier to learn this way.

Dubin is an authority on EKG interpretation, but his plodding teaching style just didn't work for me. Both authors present reliable information in their EKG texts, but this is a perfect example of two books that use completely different teaching styles. I'm glad I found Thaler's direct, detailed, concise text to learn this essential skill.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best EKG Book Around!, April 28, 2006
I'm a medical student, and this is the best EKG book I've found for learing EKGs relevant for students. Probably all you need for med school exams are heart blocks and MIs, but this book has all the major stuff, bundle branch/fasicular/hemi -blocks, SVTs, etc. The best part about this book is that its NOT just pattern recognition like other EKG books. It tells you why a rhythm is narrow vs wide, what's actually going on in that re-entrant rhythm, why that block looks the way it does by relating it to what's actually going on with the current, which makes you remember it better. Basically, if you just want to memorize some shapes, go use Dubin. But if you want to understand why EKGs make the patterns they do for various pathologies, then you MUST buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let the book excerpts speak for themselves, April 30, 2005
I would recommend to all to first look at the excerpts and decide which style best suites your style of learning. I viewed the Thaler first, and then Dubin. My learning style is much more suited to Thaler; the fill in the blank style of Dubin was so ridiculous that I thought it was a joke at first. On the other hand some people may find that style more conducive to their learning needs, so there is no need to burn the book in a bonfire.

The interesting part is that I had originally set out to buy the Dubin after reading the reviews about the book. The negative Dubin reviews mentioned the Thaler book as a better alternative and many reviews mentioned the different styles of the books as factors. Bravo to reviewers for helping me make a smart choice for me. Thaler it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief, to the point but complete, October 25, 2003
As a med student this book is a great intro text to understanding EKG's. Its written simple and to the point, and re-highlights key points, such as the 5 key malignancies in PVC's to detect. I doubt it would be sufficient for a cardiologist, but for med student/basic IM residency should suffice.

    5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO EKG'S, February 8, 2003
This book was awesome!! I started with Dubin's, which was okay, but it just wasn't giving me the basics. This book was very helpful in understanding the basics of EKG's and really helped me on my exams. Easy to read- I read a few chapters between study sessions and I found it is a great reference book to supplement classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book, May 19, 2006
My initial exposure to EKGs was via Dubin. That was a great starter. But a couple of months later, I had to relearn everything again and this book really helped. Each chapter is divided into subheadings. Each subheading gives you the big picture. Then the whole chapter concludes with a recap: an EKG for each subheading. It was great. I checked it out from my library and did not buy it (if you can, I suggest you buy it). Happy learning!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!, February 24, 2007
I totally loved this book. It is fantastic for really learning and understanding ekg's. I looked at Dubin's book, but felt it was sort of insulting to the reader. I didn't like his 'see Dick and Jane' sort of format. Also, drawing pictures and writing your own comments? I am not five years old.

This book is gentle and easy and I really understood the physiology of how ekg's work. The understanding of why they work is crucial to being able to interpret them. I picked up the ability to intuit where and what was going on by knowing the electrophysiology. Wonderful! Now I feel confident when presented with a new ekg, I can work through the steps and then put the picture together.

    What a terrifc book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for medical students, March 25, 1999
This book is well organized, easy to follow and superbly written. Thaler makes EKG easy. His wit also shows through: the title is actually fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive, "must have" reference, August 12, 1998
Magee's text is the most comprehensive, practical text covering diagnosis and evaluation of orthopedics I've found. I recommend it without reservation to anyone involved in neuro-musculo-skeletal examination and diagnosis, including athletic trainers, sports medicine specialists, primary care physicians, physiatrists, and physical therapists.

OPA is organized to include applied anatomy, patient history, detailed examination techniques (including all the eponymous tests), diagnostic imaging, and case studies for each joint of the body. Also included are chapters on Gait, Posture, Emergency Sports Assessment, and Preparticipation Examination.

From a physician's viewpoint, the text lacks only a discussion of therapeutic approaches. However, these hinge fundamentally on the physical diagnosis and lie more in the realm of physical therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great contribution to medical education, poor photographs, February 11, 2005
I bought this textbook together with Ferri's Clinical advisor with great enthusiasm. Though this book has fewer contributors, it offers enormous amount of information on physical assessment. Other than the reference pages at the end of each chapter, you cannot spot a single page that does not have a drawing, a photograph, charts, tables, or tips. You cannot resist but feel great appreciation to the hard work invested in this masterpiece.

In the era of Internet, when many folks opted to stay away from books, this book's style offers very competitive alternative to electronic media. The only drawback is its blurred black and white photos. Although the author attempted to compensate for such deficit by many informative drawings, yet better quality photos help contemporary readers to stay focused longer during reading.

Of course, the book is about physical assessment so it stops short of complete orthopedic textbook. Each joint is discussed in terms of its applied anatomy, history taking, examination, and ends by case studies, followed by extensive lists of references. In addition to regional assessments of joints, chapters 14 and 15 discuss the assessment of gait and posture, chapter 16 of the amputee, chapter 17 of emergency sports, and chapter 18 of physical evaluation prior to participation in sport. The eighteen chapters extend over a 1000 large sized pages with two color printing, which make its reading a breathe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, not the best, January 31, 2006
I thought this was an excellent exam book. I preferred Hoppenfeld's book, though there is less info. Of all the ones I've read, the best is still Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis. I think Magee's is better for a reference. Pocket Guide to MSK Dx is better for daily use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Text, March 19, 2003
Offers all the standard special tests that you could ask for, and a whole wack of other unproven diagnsotic tests. Doens't really provide evidence for many of the special tests listed, or the psychometric properties (such as specificity, sensitivity, reliability etc) which are necessary for evidence based practice. Third edition was somewhat more concise and didnt include a lot of the "useless" diagnostic tests which appear in the lateset edition and only serve to confuse the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding reference in orthopedic examination, February 16, 2008
The Fifth Edition of Orthopedic Physical Assessment is an outstanding reference for orthopedic physical therapists. The additional color pictures, illustrates, and upgraded tables within the chapter topics provides the reader a overview of a wealth of information. The regional and diagnose specific functional measurement/assessment tests are helpful for clinical outcome measurement data. Chapter four presents an outstanding overview of TMJ examination for an example. The chapter Appendixes with the reliability, validity, specificity, and sensitivity of special/diagnostic tests are helpful.

I looked forward to seeing the 5th edition and have not been disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundational Text for Physical Therapy, and Orthopedics, June 28, 2000
Excellent in all respects. Should be a core text in all Physical Therapy Programs. Head and shoulder above other texts of its kind. The authors have remained current with every edition. A great reference for orthopedic residents as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars One major complaint, October 1, 2010
Well written, but I've got the fifth edition and there is one serious flaw that really frustrates me and shows a serious error in logic: If you go to the end of the chapter to check a reference, all that you will find is a note stating "To enhance this text and add value for the reader, all references have been incorporated into a CD-ROM provided with this text".

How exactly is that adding value? I have to go try and fish out some CD, attach the CD player to my laptop and try to navigate around until I find the reference list for that particular chapter?

How about just adding two pages at the end of each chapter with the reference lists? This is a serious flaw and shows an error in judgment, especially for those who like to actually check the references cited within the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and yet never dull, December 27, 2008
The first time I saw this book in the hands of an US exchange student, I became jealous. Everything I had learned as a fourth year pt student on diagnostic assessment was in there and more. I just had to have it. From details of observation to validity of test procedures, it is all there, even the more obscure and rarely used tests. In combination with lots of drawings (albeit not very detailed), x-rays, and pictures, everything you ever could want to know is available. And it is well written, compact but clear. It is THE book on the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic and a must in your shelf of PT books., November 11, 2006
This is probably what I consider as the Bible in the realm of Physical Therapy. I have had this book ever since I was in college and it has proven to be valuable to me now that I am in my 11th year of practice as it was when I was still in my budding internship. I consider the cases found at the end of every chapter as the most helpful and insightful and for anyone hooked on evidence-based treatment strategies, this book is a must. Ms. Sullivan's work is seminal and phenomenal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best price for this manual, June 10, 2009
Needed this manual to renew my BLS certification. The American Heart Association suggests 3 sources to purchase this item; all charged ridiculous shipping. Paying $7.95 shipping for an $11.00 book? FREE ship at Amazon with super saver shipping. SWEET!! Anyway, the manual is awesome, everything you need to know to get certified in Basic Life Support, and also excellent if you just want to learn how to provide CPR, use an automated external defibrillator, relieve a choking victim. The CD ROM is great for those who like the visual reinforcement of the text. BE AWARE-there are those out there selling the older manuals that do not reflect updates in practice. This is the most current version from 2006. I am guessing the committee will meet in the next couple of years to update if necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized and directly applicable, April 9, 2000
This text is the most valuable one I own. The information is extremely useful and is written in very understandable language. The best aspect of each description of the Pathology is the "Implications for the PT" that follows each one. These columns break each pathological condition down into what we can and should do in each case, and what we cannot do for each case. An excellent source of information.

This book is THAT good. It is the most clear and concise book on various pathologies that I have seen since entering PT school a decade ago. It's a huge book that covers every illness one could possibly think of. As a required text for my tDPT program I was a little put off initially by the price but it is well worth the expense. I have used it frequently when a client has presented with symptoms which just didn't match their referral dx. I have also used it with family members and friends who have been diagnosed with serious illnesses and it has been very informative. This should be in every PT's personal library...you can always ask for it on your wishlist! Also, if you have a chance to take a continuing ed course from Ms. Goodman, please do...I had the opportunity last month and she was a very dynamic speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book you need for OB/Gyn Clerkship, December 8, 2009
With so many resources out there for medical school clerkships, sometimes choosing the right one can be exhausting. Most of the time, I rely on review books, but even that is difficult because there are so many options and little continuity across clerkships. For example, Blueprints was great for Peds, but almost useless for Medicine. Case Files is generally pretty good for most clerkships, but its always a gamble because its generally limited in content and often important concepts are not adequately addressed.
Obstetrics and Gynecology by Beckman is a rare example of a textbook that is comprehensive and concise. It is easy to read, and really hits all of the key points that are important on the wards and for the shelf. It works great as a quick reference because the topics are intuitively organized, and current references are provided for nearly all content.
Most importantly, it is written is conjunction with The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists- so you know the source of the information is legitimate. They basically tell you what is important to know according to the current guidelines.
Also, its short and to the point, so its perfect to use as a reference when studying for step 2. So far it's the only textbook I've kept around (other than Harrison's) for studying for step 2.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, May 27, 2010
I was surprised when I began reading this - it feels less a text and more a collection of documents from ACOG. In hindsight it was a great tool for covering the GYN/OB content because each topic covered was concise - this is definitely an asset when one has to read a lot of material for class. The illustrations where great too(colorful and descriptive). This is a good go-to for practice since you can quickly and easily review specific material. Why 4 stars - now, if they only had an e-book version it would be perfect! ... Read more

This practical guide focuses on the evidence-based neuroscience information that is most relevant to the practice of physical rehabilitation. It connects the theory of neuroscience with real-world clinical application with such features as: stories written by real people with neurological disorders, case studies, and lists summarizing key features of neurological disorders. It also provides clear descriptions of a complete range of neurological disorders and the body systems they affect. The text progresses logically from the molecular and cellular levels, to systems, and then to regions, to help make complex information easy to master. Special features such as Clinical Notes boxes with "at-a-glance" summaries, Red Flag boxes, and hundreds of full-color illustrations, enhance the learning experience and make it easy for the student and clinician to access clinically relevant information.

    • Uses full-color clinical and gross photographs to clarify the spatial relationships among neural structures and show pathological neural changes
    • A color atlas provides gross photographs and scans with accompanying diagrams that label key structures in the brain
    • Numerous tables, flow charts, and boxes highlight essential concepts, processes, and relationships
    • At-a-Glance Disorder boxes outline the pathology, etiology, signs and symptoms, and prognoses of the most common neurological disorders to provide a quick summary of the features of neurological disorders commonly encountered in clinical practice
    • Clinical Notes at the end of the chapter sections provide relevant case studies with questions to demonstrate clinical applications of neuroscience knowledge and challenges the student to apply the information to clinical situations
    • Review Questions at the end of each chapter help students focus on key subject matter from each chapter
    • Actual patient stories set the scene for many chapters to help the student and clinician relate the scientific information to clinical reality

    • A DVD with approximately 40 video clips and animations supports concepts in the text
    • Chapter outlines at the beginning of each chapter succinctly define the chapter content

    4-0 out of 5 stars A good general reference, December 19, 2002
Laurie Lundy-Ekman's book was the textbook in my recent upper division neuroanatomy course and offered a good base reference for the course. The author mentions neurological problems relevant to the brain area discussed in that chapter, which is helpful for a better understanding. Its a great reference book to keep on the shelf and its smaller size makes it more handy than other larger neurology books.
