Stunning book, Love it!, October 7, 2009
Very nice hardback book with lots of stunning pictures of what else? Star Wars Legos!

We are big fans of Legos in general and this book did not disappoint. It came with a bonus Luke Skywalker mini-figure. As with all DK books, you get great pictures, thorough descriptions, and just a generally enjoyable book to collect or read.

I bought 2 copies of this book, one to read, and one to collect.

The only thing that bothered me a (very tiny) little bit was how the Luke Skywalker mini-fig was packaged. At first glance it looks like a much thicker book, but about half of the thickness is a spacer placed inside the book to make room for the mini-fig, so it lays flush with the front cover. I posted some pictures on the main item page if you want to see what I mean. Nothing that I would knock a star off for though.

Overall, we are VERY happy with this book. Great price for a quality book that will not disappoint young and old!

Good but not great, October 10, 2009
My 6 year old son and I like the book very much, but it is defineately not as detail oriented as we would have liked. Many of the sets only get 1 or 2 pictures and you do not get to see many of the neat pieces or accessories that come in each of the sets. I was hoping for at least a better description with what minifigures were with each set and the additional accessories. Many sets like the Clone Turbo Tank and the different Clone Walkers and gunships do not have pictures of what is inside of them or the pieces you can take out (like where you can sit all of your figures). Also, there were some misses on the variations of some of the minifigures (the new super battle droid that have a laser rifle arm). We would have also liked an index in the back since many sets are shown 1-3 times throughout the book. The Luke minifig is neat and the book does show some great stuff we hadn't seen in a while but it just seems they didn't try hard on this book. Another neat thing was one image of a set idea that was never made but developed for the Yavin base. Would have been great with some more examples of that. Also, the distant picture of all the star wars minifigs was not good enough for me. The inside of the book covers could have been a great place to reprint the star wars poster with all the minifigs that Lego put out last year as part of the 10 year anniversary. And couldn't we have gotten a sneak peek at the next batch Lego? C'mon. Overall a nice book, but some what disappointing with the lack of detailed photos and info for each set.

Title: The Visual Dictionary....of all the Lego Star Wars items out on the market!

This book is organized very well.
The book has 4 chapters: 1.Movie Saga, 2. The Clone Wars, 3. Specialists Sets, 4.Beyond the Brick (96 pgs total)

It has pictures of all of the Star Wars Legos that have come out so far. There is a time-line that tells when each of the items came out, year by year and also episode by episode The pictures and descriptions are clear and colorful. Each of the Lego sets has a picture, the Lego #, number of pieces and the film episode. What more can you ask for?

The book is hardbound and the cover has about an inch thick insert where the mini-figure is stored. This makes the book appear thicker than it actually is. I wasn't expecting that but the book is still nice and thick and full of great information for any Star Wars lover.

A Great buy for under 15 bucks!
This is a keeper for sure for my 7 yr old son who will be thrilled on his Birthday!

Great for Lego Star Wars Fans and Collectors, October 7, 2009
My son adores Lego, and the Star Wars sets in particular. When this book arrived in our mailbox, he was gone for hours, hiding in his room poring over all the sets he has, the sets he wants, the sets he missed out on, the evolution of the various mini-figures, everything else included in this volume. While this book would NOT be appreciated by someone who isn't a die-hard fan of the LEGO series, for those who collect, play with, and love the sets, it's a great book at a great price.

The only problem with the book is that it will be out of date as soon as next season's Lego Star Wars sets are announced.

On a final note, I didn't realize when I ordered that it also came with a unique minifig, which is already selling on Ebay for more than the discounted price of the book.

As a Lego Star Wars fan, I had great expectations of this book - so much so that after word that an exclusive minifig was to be included, I immediately preordered it. Now that it is in my eager hands, I have to review what I had expected of the book. I agree with some reviewers here that it is a just a Lego Star Wars catalogue, albeit a very good one. As someone who have just picked up this rather expensive hobby long after my last Lego set, it is a great chronicle of all sets past, present and all in between. With all the magnificent photography in the tradition of DK books, it is one fantastic 'catalogue'. For that it has served it's purpose.

However, some of the content in my opinion, is repeat info for fans of the series. This is unnecessary for a book like this. I would rather have this book contain more information from a Lego point of view, like the great tibits of facts pertaining to some sets on some pages, rather than explaining how Darth Vader came to be. A cross between the recently published Lego DK book and the StarWars series would have been preferable for me, like the last 2 chapters on UCS sets and set development. I was done going through the book in less than an hour

But still I'm giving it 3 stars for the excellent images, the timeline of all the sets, and of course, the exclusive Luke minifig.

We waited all year for this book -- but I guess we waited too long. Who decided how many books to print? Any parent of a star wars fan could have told you to print a lot.

This book rocks! It's for kids that are into Lego Star Wars. I got it for my son for his 10th b-day, & he absolutely loves it!! It's like a dictionary for all the Lego Star Wars products. Some things we have never seen before, some we have in his collection- all the pics are colorful, and ours came w/ a free figure. (I did not buy this here @ Amazon) A must have for lego Star Wars Fans!!

DK does it again, November 18, 2009
As a librarian, I have always been impressed with DK titles. They do such a great job with illustrations and for boys who are reluctant readers (usually), this is just the ticket. My 9 yr old grandson is really into Legos and although he is not a reluctant reader (just the opposite), it will be a hit on Christmas morning. I probably will have to rip it out of his hands to come to the dinner table.

Lives up to it's name, November 12, 2010
Encyclopedia of the Exquisite is a fantastically delightful read. It was clear when I read the introduction that the author and I are kindred spirits. This book engages the little girl in me who thought the glass doorknobs on our old house were made of diamonds and clearly had magical powers. Each entry is it's own adventure, like a peephole into a bygone era. The author writes clearly and beautifully, making each bit come to life on the page and the illustrations are gorgeous!
I'm having to force myself to read only a little at a time to make it last longer, like I'd do with a fancy bar of chocolate. I'm already wondering if she'll consider a second volume, as I am now noticing exquisite things all around me that I'd love to know the story of. I know I'll be giving copies to friends for years to come, beginning with this Christmas!

A delicious book. Kerwin-Jenkins has done meticulous research to bring us bits of way-off-the-wall history. Each entry is more fascinating than the preceding one. Did you know about the Elephantine Colossus at Coney Island, one of three huge buildings shaped like the animal that were all the rage at the turn of the century. A big blue one at the Paris World's Fair in 1899. Only one remains, the 65-foot Lucy at the Jersey Shore. And that is just the "E's!
This is a jewel of a book to be savored very slowly.

This is one of those great treasuries that you and your friends can revisit time and time again. Entertaining, amusing, and extremely interesting, this timeless catalog of the extraordinary makes a great holiday/birthday/housewarming gift. More sophisticated than your average "coffee table" book but not so high-brow that it can't be enjoyed by one and all. Each entry is a gem and the book surpasses the sum of the parts. I stumbled onto this and I'm glad I did!

I absolutely do not regret this purchase. Encyclopedia of the Exquisite is exquisite itself. It's a beautiful book filled with charming illustrations, anecdotes and facts about historical figures and phenomena of all kinds. Kerwin is an excellent writer who has clearly done serious research with an impressively wide reach, but she delivers is with wit and levity. Every entry is a short, concise piece so I have been picking it up and putting it down for days, skipping all around the book. I wish I had one in every room in the house. And it really is a beautiful book in itself. I am definitely buying a copy of this for everyone I know for Christmas. It's perfect.

A Must for Lego Enthusiasts, October 10, 2009
I pre-ordered this set for my 12 yr old son. I received it yesterday and I must say I am quite pleased with the set. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the colorful pages and skimming over all the mini figures and sets that have evolved over the decades. Viewing the pages provided a bit of nostalgia for me as I was able to share my own memories with my son. This set is great for the Lego Collector or enthusiast. I really enjoyed the overview of the history of Lego along with the timelines and descriptions of manufacturing, etc.

If you are looking for "building tips" or "an idea book" this is not the book for you, instead I would look into the purchase of: "The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide" by Allan Bedford, or the DK Lego Modelers series that have booklets containing ways to create characters using common lego pieces that you may already have in your collection.

I had this pre-ordered quite a while ago, and it finally showed up yesterday!
HEAVY, thick hard covers, in an even HEAVIER thick slip cover! Even the "bonus book" about the mini figure is the same wonderful quality. GREAT value for the money!

What a brilliant look a the history of the LEGO brick and the company as a whole. For those looking for new and outrageous models you might be in for a bit of disappointment, as this is more of a visual history. I had so much fun remembering back with all the old sets they showed, and looking at the time line and thinking, "Was it REALLY 20 years ago I got that set for my birthday?"

This book is all about the visual. There is a minimal amount of words per page, but they do a wonderful job at describing what is going on, and leading us through the journey, and not taking away from the well laid out pages.

One other review complained that this was a "glorified catalog", but how else would you like to display almost 300 pages of toys? ANY book about a 50+ year line of toys will come off a bit catalog like, no matter how much you try to avoid that. I for one give kudos to the authors from cramming in so many sets and making sure the name and year of each set shown is displayed. These names and date help link the items to the time line, as well as give me a starting point to try and find an old copy of a set that this book brought out fond memories of!

I love new and exciting builds as much as the next guy, that's why I am a Brick Journal subscriber (the compendiums are available here on Amazon, and well worth the money!), this book is not meant to do that. This book is a visual history of the entire LEGO system up to today. The book even included the current Space Police and Power Miners lines, and mentions the new Disney lines coming out next year, so you know the information is as up to date as possible in print form!

I had this on order,for a long time,delivered yesterday,and it was worth the wait.
This is 2 books in a slide in case and the quality is fantastic.One book on figures
and building kits,and the other telling of the history of lego.Photography is stunning
and the layout of both books is first rate.As you go through the pages,the images of
supersized lego figures are a visual treat.As this was a gift for my grandson,who loved
it,I ordered another the same day for myself,an owner of a 9 ft. Lego castle display
with over 400 figures!

The History of Lego from 2000, February 11, 2010
I've now read in their entirety both the Lego Book and the Minifig Book which form the core of this collection. As a collector of Legos since their heyday in the late 1980s (think Pirates) to the present, I've seen a lot of Lego memorabilia. When I received this book collection for Christmas, I was really, truly hoping that DK was intending to focus on the complete history of Lego and the Lego minifigure. Sadly, I was mistaken.

Don't get me wrong, the books are beautifully illustrated in full color on quality paper in a cute little collectors box. But in the end, I feel rather let down. For the main book, I was let down by the content. The book focused on the history of Lego for the first dozen pages or so but then switched to the individual themes. I was actually okay with that. I mean, if you want to see the complete line of Legos from the 1950s to the present, buy the 2008 set collectors guide. I would have liked to see a bit more of a review of the early town and train themes and how they developed prior to the creation of the minifig, but I was generally okay with the content and quality of the brief history of Lego.

The theme sections are what really got me down. I know Lego sponsored this DK book but, technically at least, this is not a Lego production. It is independent. It has no Lego set number, no Lego pieces, only pictures. Yet somehow it is very obvious from the very start that this book was designed and funded by Lego. The majority of the themes have at least one page focusing on the most recent sub-theme of a series. Be it the 2007 Castle line, the 2008 Space Police, the 2007 Clone Wars, or the recent City themes. They are very present throughout this book. What really irked me was the treatment of the Lego Pirates. They dedicate one spread to the 1989-1996 series of Pirates and another full spread to just the 2008 line. That just seems insulting. The 2-year Westerners series is crammed on the same spread as the Adventurers and Time Cruisers. Meanwhile, other lines like Star Wars (1999-present) get four full spreads or more. I couldn't even see examples of some of my favorite Space lines such as M-Tron, Blacktron II, or Spyrius. They just weren't there! The objectiveness of this "Lego Book" is very much in question and I would rather call it the "History of Lego from 2000" than anything else.

My larger gripe, though, is with the accompanying Lego Minifigure book. Where the Lego Book lacked in content, the minifig book lacked in everything except visual appeal. Even at times that was in question, though. As with the Lego Book, the minifig book is in full color and on good quality paper. It fits snugly beside the Lego Book in its collector's box. Yet I have a feeling that significantly less time was spent on this younger cousin of the larger Book. Any editor who read this would laugh out loud. Indeed, I have yet to find a page that doesn't have a spelling, grammatical, or factual error. In almost all cases there are multiple such problems on the pages. Besides being about as non-comprehensive as the Lego Book, barely covering more than the last decade's worth of minifigures, the style of this book is extremely wanting. Many pages I have found odd and hardly interesting facts on the wrong page (the fact that Prof. Snape's head was the first glow-in-the-dark minifig part appearing on the page AFTER that minifig was shown comes to mind). In other places, the same exact minifig appears twice, sometimes on the same page even, often with a different date despite the fact that they are the same exact figure. In other cases, I have found incorrect dates for figures, or even incorrect names. One funny error notes that the Clone Wars in Star Wars took place over 300 years, rather than the canonical 3 years. In virtually all aspects, the minifig book lacks the quality-control checks and editing I would expect from DK. It is as though the people who arranged the hodgepodge of images also created the captions with absolutely no oversight. Were the minifig book sold separately, I would probably demand a full refund from the publisher out of sheer anger at the poor editing of this book. While the visual appeal is arguably good, the writing of some of the poorest quality I have seen in a publication.

So, my advice is to buy this set if you want it purely for the images. It is a great visual feast of Legoness. However, if you expect deep content and a fun jaunt back into the history of Lego, I'd suggest you wait for another book because this will leave you scratching your head asking: "Didn't Lego make more sets before 2000?"

Nothing but a Catalog, June 18, 2010
My wife and I are both big fans of Legos, and I bought these books for her, in the hopes of seeing the typically nice job DK does of displaying something's visual history.

Both of these books devote a very small amount of pages to Lego's history, showing woefully few photographs of older Lego sets, Lego sculptures, and related items. The majority of the books is devoted to multiple page spreads of JUST the products which Lego has currently on the market. The photographs of these products are not even very interesting, and could have been lifted directly from Lego's own marketing material, for all I know.

Its a dull work which almost reads like a product brochure, rather than what it purports to be, a tribute to a very fun toy with a long and interesting history.

When my wife looked at the book, she politely asked me to return it, which I did.

VERY DISAPPOINTED

My 9 year old nephew is in love with this book!, November 24, 2009
I just gave it to him for his birthday today and I have achieved my goal which is to buy him the best possible gift and soldify my #1 Auntie Anne status! :) He is glued to this book and enjoying it immensely (to say the least) All kidding aside my only regret is that I gave him the book when I first saw him. I drive 1 1/2 hours to see him and as we went about our activites he lugged that heavy book everywhere and had his nose poked into it at every lull in activity! Needless to say I did not get his full attention that day but he was in "Lego book" heaven. This book is light years better than a catalog...there is no comparision. As an educator, I can see that it also is helping with his reading. There are lots of wonderful pictures, but plenty of text which encourages reading. Another plus!

Have a great Christmas. I just had to write this review tonight for those of you that are looking to buy christmas presents for youth who are Lego fans. Oh and I also have a 4 year old nephew in the same family. Did not want to leave him out! He is a Lego fan too. Bought him a AMAZING Lego Duplo sticker book with 600 color stickers. I bought it at Barnes and Noble. Not sure if Amazon has it?

I have been waiting for this after my boys saw it in the catalog. What a surprise! This is an amazing value for the quality and size of these books. My boys are going to go nuts over these when I give them to them for xmas. It is even better than the 10 year old version that my kids have studied for ages. The amazing photos and facts are just what every collector is looking for! It is definitely more than a catalog.

2 striking books for fans, November 23, 2009
Overall, the book was great. It has a few minor inaccuracies, but they're negligible. This "book" is actually two books in one slipcover. One documents the Lego Group over the years - from the time that the founder was making wooden toys at the turn of the century to the more recent NXT programmable bricks, etc. The pics are striking, and the information given is interesting. It's by no means an 'academic' book, nor is it a thorough history of the company. It's more of a visual tour. It's fun to flip through the pages and review the models that I had as a kid that have since been long-lost. The minifig book is great too.

Photography and details will blow your mind if you are a Lego fan!, November 7, 2009
I began collecting Lego for me about 6 months ago...not many moms have this hobby, but it is a blast. After 15+ years of picking up and sorting the %&**&^%$%^& things, I decided to collect some girlie ones for me....gorgeous pastel ladies who could live in gorgeous pastel houses except when they are under attack by my husband's mean old trolls.
It took about 6 months of reading geeky product listings on [...] to figure out who is who and to whom they are related. Wish I had had the Standing Small minifigure book back then because it is just what I needed to identify and buy the female minifigs and house parts.
The photography of the minifigs is out of this world; we tried taking photos of some of our minifigs, and it is extremely difficult to capture the quality of detail in this book. Also I now know which ladies came in which set, and which guys' bodies would be great for sex changes into lovely ladies. May the fun begin!
The limited text (the pages are mostly filled with photos of Lego) explains how Lego developed in a chronological sequence that brings back happy memories of buying them 18 years ago for my then 3 year old son. The authors did a beautiful job of documenting the introduction of each set and type of Lego.
If you enjoy playing and collecting Lego as an adult, a child or an in between, these two books are a blessing.
For building ideas, read the above reviews as there are other sources more suited for building things not in the Lego sets. Our favorite is Brick Journal, which highlights many incredible creations each issue.
This two-book set is a masterpiece of fine art and history and a very entertaining read. I could not put it down last night when my husband pulled it out of his car as a gift for me.

This product lends itself SO well to a video---it is very hard to describe just how pretty and useful and fun it is. This quarter collection folder is a great way to introduce kids to U.S. geography, coin collecting, etc. It is a made of high quality cardboard, has a large map of the U.S. with a place for each quarter and is loaded with fun facts on each state. Whether you are a youngster or adult, you will find this product to be a good value. I love to see excellent educational products like this at a decent price point. It's even suitable to hang on the wall in a bedroom, den or wherever.

Alright. For anyone considering on buying this, I have to say it will be money well spent. If you are reading the reviews below me, I have to tell you some things have changed. If you look at the video review that Ms. Brown has, you would think the map is complete with the 50 states. I would like to warn you: Her map is outdated. When I first brought mine, I went by what she said because she explained it so well and since I had 49 out of 50 states already, it would be easy for me to place them in. When I got it, I notice something immediately...... There was additional slots for more coins. To much my surprise, these were slots for the 2009 coins. So not only do you have to get the 50 states (Which is now very easy to obtain) but you have to get US territories (Guam, US Virgin Islands, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands. These coins are extremely hard to find though being released to the public in 2009). Despite that surprise, the product is exceptional due to it being updated and you can either have it on your wall, store it for safe keeping, or sell it as a collector's item (The least you can get is around $75 and up to a max of $200). This is definitely worth buying. The only struggle is getting all the coins. Other than that, the best way to show you have put in time and effort to have a collection worth having.

A Fantastic Resource For Information, But..., October 2, 2010
The 2011 Red Book once again blows away all expectations! It is the industry standard for both beginning and experienced collectors. Now in it's 63rd addition, this year's Red Book added special sections for the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cents, the 2011 Presidential Dollar designs, and the new America The Beautiful Quarter program. There are also extended informational reviews on U.S. Private Issue tokens and colonial coinage.

The only issue with the Red Book is the annual nature. Unfortunately, most pricing is already obsolete due to a fast moving precious metals market. Overall however, the Red Book is definitely the best resource on the market for overall numismatic information.

I can safely say that even I was impressed by the content of this small ebook. As soon as I found out I was getting a Kindle (back in July), I began looking for resources for free and inexpensive books. I hadn't heard of most of these and have been enjoying going through and seeing what's available.

The title of this e-book does indeed what it says it does. However, there is absolutely NO advantage gained from purchasing this book. I've researched every site that is outlined by the author and found that the only titles offered on these poorly constructed, apparent "fly-by-night" websites are free on amazon.com anyway. Trust me, I have a huge issue with buying a book for only 20% less through Kindle and not having the book in my hands concretely. Some of my fondest memories are of time spent haunting used bookstores searching for good reads. One thing that always drew my attention was the distinctive covers of Penguin books; I always knew they would be good books at a great price. Declaring that 'good design is no more expensive than bad', Lane was adamant that his Penguin paperbacks should cost no more than a packet of cigarettes, but that they should always look distinctive. Those distinctive covers are known around the world. This collection was walking through a history of my own love of books. I had read 27 of the 100 books in this collection and 23 of them with these covers. It is a wonderful collection for any booklover.

More bang for your buck, November 6, 2010
Most of the book covers printed in these postcards are vintage covers. Some of the covers are plain while others are downright bizarre. I don't get why Penguin back in the days chose book covers that do not relate to the story whatsoever but one of my theories is that they just wanted to confound their readers enough so they would buy their copies again and again. The titles range from the mundane such as "Keeping Poultry and Rabbits on Scraps" by Claude Goodchild to the iconic "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess.

This product would definitely appeal to bibliophiles and book cover aficionados. The postcards showcase the evolution of Penguin styles. It's pretty interesting to see the penguin in every Penguin book change in appearance over the years.

I'm a member of a site that sends postcards around the world, so if you send postcards as a hobby, this product is for you. It's way cheaper than buying postcard books.

I just love these and for the amazon price, they are a total steal. You're getting a ton of postcards of book covers here and although they are simple, they are awesome. Some are kind of plain, while some have more illustrated covers but there are some really famous titles in here as well as some funny ones. Very cute and chic!

This book covers an extensive array of firearms and prices for varying conditions. It is an excellent reference. All it needs is photos of the firearm described. There are small variances in many, particularly the Winchesters, that may make them difficult to identify without a photo.

The Blue Book is the "bible" for those who deal in used firearms.
Whether buying or selling, this is the place to start when setting a price to buy, sell, or bargain with respect to a particular gun. It is comprehensive and user friendly for those who do not engage in this area very often, but it can be well worth the price in terms of over- or underpricing of firearms for sell or purchase. As an added bonus, this edition honors a true American hero on the cover and inside with an interview of Joe Foss, WWII ace and Medal of Honor recipient. Military weapons are low, April 6, 2006
I deal with guns on a daily basis and I refer to this book several times a day. Most of the values listed in the book seem to correspond with the market. However, U.S. military firearms and some of the Colt pistols are listed too low. For collecting purposes the descriptions are too vague. I refer to the many auction sights and specialty dealers on line that list these types of weapons for sale. Some of these dealers are are highly reputable and published authors on US martial weapons.These types of firearms increase in value quickly as the interest in U.S.military history grows. This book does not reflect the rapid increase in value that these guns have made in the past few years. Overall this book is very useful, but when researching the value of a specific military weapon, consult the internet or buy a book.

Has a cross Reference for makers and serial # made on dates. Shows the listing of model variations/dates/serial # runs in a series of gun. All one needs is the Gun in hand or complete list of features to determine Model/Type & Era. Each listing has the wording on the barrel of each model it covers to determine the type. No guide can be complete end of story. This gude takes you where you need to be to determine Type and value.

Just received my 26th Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values. I use this book to evaluate guns that I am interested in adding to my collection. I am active in several gun collecting societies, and attend many gun shows during the year, but I find it is impossible to stay current on pricing in all the different aspects of what I have interest in acquiring. I have learned over several years of relying on this book as a guide for pricing that it is the most accurate reference available to the collector and dealer. The information is presented in a logical, understandable, and useable format. I have found the pricing to be realistic and up-to-date, and most dealers and collectors will agree on the pricing as a base line in negotiating whether buying, selling, or trading.

Also, I also do some appraisal work for a local company in estate valuation. When thay have gun collections large or small that need appraising, I typically utilize the newest Blue Book of Gun Values as the reference and starting point. The formal pricing presented, whether for insurance or estate valuation, has never been challenged. I highly recommend this publication to all dealers, collectors, and appraisers.

I should have bought one of these (earlier edition) years ago. Now when I sell a firearm and someone says that is too much I can show them the price range. I also use these figures to calculate how much to insure the firearms for and the Insurance Agent checks it also. I will use it at the next gun show and hope it will save me some money from greedy sales-people.

The blue book of gun values is the best publication of it's type. However, it's not perfect. The biggest problem is that many prices in the book simply don't reflect the going rate. This is mainly true for models recently discontinued ~ in the last 2-3 years (for example HK P7 series are WAY off of actual street price) as well as any "assault weapons" that seem to change rates on every rumor of new litigation. So, while it is a good resource, you end up double checking online sites like AuctionArms and Gunbroker to determine price anyway. Also, many gunstores seem to refer to this publivation when buying, but it's strangly absent in their arguments as to why their used stock is priced so high.... That said, it IS the best of what's out in the printed world, so it gets 4 stars in my book.

Material is generally good..., August 13, 2010
But the editing stinks. I know some people think this is nitpicking, but it's distracting and undermines the reader's faith in the material and enjoyment of reading to regularly see what look like OCR errors (like an exclamation point in place of a lowercase L in the middle of a word) throughout the book. That might just be enough to knock off a star, but it's much worse: I noticed two places where a column break obviously cut off some amount of text. How much? Who knows? It could be a sentence, or it could be ten paragraphs.

Many of the articles are quite good, and they're well chosen: there are articles on all different kinds of hunting, shooting, and collecting topics, and they were good enough to keep my interest even where I had no particular interest in the subject. For the most part, it's just a fun book to sit down and kill an evening with. But the pervasive evidence that nobody cared enough to read the text after it was pasted into the print file definitely hurts the experience.

Great Articles, But Short on Semi-Auto Listings, July 29, 2010
Gun Digest is legendary for its Reports From The Field articles. This year's edition does not disappoint in that regard. Also included are a wealth of handy ballistics charts. I did find, however, that the section of listings for semi-auto rifles was very sparse -- nowhere near a comprehensive listing of what's out there on the market. If you buy the Gun Digest to do some armchair shopping for semi-auto rifles, you'll most likely be disappointed. Too bad. If the author was to beef up the firearm listings, Gun Digest could be quite the definitive, comprehensive digest that it comes close to being.

This is a well written book that gives you all the basics- How detectors work, what you should look for, who the manufacturers are...He even gives good advice, that I wouldn't have thought of on my own- such as searching the internet for antique maps, so you can use the detector in areas that would be more likely to have things of value.

Excellent "must-have" for all beginners. The hardest part of starting any new hobby is the trial and error learning process. That can get expensive. This book helps eliminate much of that.

This is a book for persons who are new to metal detecting. The paper book is loaded with illustrations showing equipment and techniques. None of these illustrations are included in the Kindle edition. That was a huge disappointment to me. However, the text is still very useful for beginners to this hobby.

Based on the reviews I had hoped for more but the book's content on the subject of metal detecting is very basic and left me wanting more. The book does provide numerous references to other good resources, books, web site, magazines, etc... for the details the book lacks. The binding on the copy I received was not done very well and pages are falling out after just a couple of days reading, but maybe that's just my copy. This is definitely a book for someone that has no idea what metal detecting is about and as an over view on that subject I would say it provides the information to get you started and were to go to find more information.

I purchased this book for my husband based on the reviews I read, and I am really pleased with the choice.
This book is not only easy to understand, but had my husband researching facts on the internet the very first day he recieved it. The author definitely points out obvious details that could very easily be overlooked by somebody who doesn't exactly know what to look for.

Another great Hammer product from Titan Books, November 29, 2010
Titan Books and Marcus Hearn have done it again. The team which produced "The Hammer Story" and "Hammer Glamour" have now come out with "The Art of Hammer", a fantastic collection of Hammer film posters. Over 300 posters representing the famous company's output are showcased. All the posters are in color, and some get a full-page picture. Posters from non-English speaking countries are included, and these are some of the most interesting and artistic in the book.
Of course Hammer is know best for their Gothic horror films, but Hammer's non-horror productions are presented as well. As for the classic monster movies Hammer fans love, they're all here--the famous poster from "The Mummy", all the Frankensteins, the Draculas--any monster movie kid will go crazy seeing these images.
While going through this book, one notices that some of the posters are more exciting than the films that they are advertising! But that was the whole reason for the posters in the first place. You don't have to be a Hammer or monster movie fan to appreciate the great collection of poster artwork here. But if you ARE a Hammer fan, you MUST get this book! Hopefully, Titan Books and Marcus Hearn have many more Hammer-themed books in store.

I was very excited to come across this book at my local bookshop, as I'm a long-time poster collector and was always hoping that someone would put together all of the beautiful Hammer art into a book. The problem is, and it is not a small deal, is that the most beautiful posters are not included, namely the large and small french posters, especially the ones by Guy-Gerard Noel for CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF and KISS OF THE VAMPIRE. The tiny image from the french HORROR OF DRACULA doesn't due justice. And there are many other great french and german posters missing from TWINS OF EVIL, VAMPIRE LOVERS, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, etc. Without these, the book is really very very incomplete. Maybe this is due to copyright issues?

The book should have been shrink wrapped separately since it had a jacket cover. This book is beautiful! I saw it at Borders today. Even if you are not interested in cockpits you should pick up this book. Cockpits are interesting and these are some of the most famous aircraft of all time.

BEAUTIFUL photography. In addition to the photos I really enjoyed the nostalgic look and feel to the book. A very cool book indeed by two of the world's best aircraft photographers. No wonder they work at the Smithsonian...

There are some wonderful flight sims out there. You can sit at your PC and fly all sorts of aircraft. Not too bad, huh? With most of these sims you can see the controls. Sometimes the controls are rendered quite faithfully, at other times you get a generic rendition. In this book, however, you'll find that other than for WW I craft, interiors get very complex indeed.

50 aircraft interiors are covered here--lots of well-done full-color photographs. With the Halberstadt CL IV in 1917 you get a spartan cockpit--about a half-dozen gauges and a handful of switches and levers. It shouldn't be too hard remembering which is which. Taking off, flying, and landing, well, that's different. The 1937 Piper Cub--still quite simple. The 1927 Lockheed Vega--maybe 15 gauges, and 20 levers. The Hurricane of WW II begins to look quite a bit more intimidating: the Corsair takes another jump in complexity. The MIG-15 begins to look despairingly difficult (yet pilots regularly flew it). The Concorde looks as if it might require its own 250-page section in a flight sim manual. Leave the actual flying to others--while you browse this delightful book!

I purchased this book for my husband for Christmas and he has thoroughly enjoyed the book. He is a former pilot (retired) so he had a "built-in" interest. There were so many cockpits he had not seen and he enjoyed seeing and reading about each. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a pilot in their family.

Beautiful book. The cover looks like leather, the book's quality reminds you of an antique book. The photographs are excellent and extremely detailed. I purchased it for a nephew who is really into WWII plains, trains and ships. For a historical aircraft lover it's a perfect gift. I only read a page or two, so I can not comment on the writing, but I believe the real beauty is in the photographs. Even someone who has little interst in aircraft found the pictures compelling.

Being hung up on internal details I really liked this book. It is a treasure trove for cockpit color data. Favorites are the He 219 Ki-45, Ju 388 and FJ-1. Ideal for modelers and armchair aeronuts.

The book looks interesting and the concept is solid. If you're into flying and especially old planes this glimpse into so many cockpits should prove of more than passing interest. That said, it's a sign of the times that even the Smithsonian Institute would stoop to some dubious marketing. If you enlarge the cover photo you'll see that John Tavolta's name is in large print just below the title. Indeed Mr. Travolta did write the forward, all five sentences of it. Literally, five generic sentences that offer nothing more than cover tease to snag some buyer interest. If you do buy the book at least lend it to those who only have a mild interest and let the Smithsonian know that they should have more integrity than promoting products with cheap celebrity hype. Since comments here must be accompanied by a rating, I'll leave it at 3 as a neutral comment.

I am a big fan of Ms Rheinstein's work as displayed in the pages of high end shelter magazines, so I was looking forward to her book. Each page is like a soft sigh: dreamy, ethereal, romantic, but also lacking in energy, newness and spark. Each decor seems a bit the same, relying heavily on 18th century predominantly French antiques. The tones are muted and somewhat dusty, and one is left wondering if she is afraid of color. Sepia, grey and faded gilt, while beautiful and successful in moderation, seem to predominate and come together in a blur without a distinct focus. One is left yearning for some unexpected juxtaposition, some pizzazz, while still remaining in the world of antiques, but this book sends the message that old is old and new is new and never the two shall meet. OK but not as good as the previous books, October 28, 2010
I bought Corvette in the Barn on the strength of how much I enjoyed Cobra and Hemi in the Barn. The book almost lived up to my expectations and was a good read, however, I noticed a few typos and a pair of mixed up pictures, which smacks a little of the book being rushed into production one final proof reading short. I also felt that about ~20% of the stories were a bit 'flat' - like they only got printed due to a lack of better material to fill the space. Don't get me wrong - I certainly enjoyed the book, and it is a good adition to the series, but not quite in the same league as the previous two. If you enjoyed Cobra and Hemi, then I would definitely recommend this one. I just hope that any future books in the series up the ante a little.

In this practical how-to guide author and long-time treasure hunter Michael Chaplan really delivers the goods. Everything from choosing a metal detector, researching a site, hunting tips and blending into various city environments are covered. One major point that is emphasized over and over again is the fact that "treasure" can take many forms and be found in many places from the attic to your local park etc. The book advises the reader to be creative when approaching a site both in your research and out in the field. For example, maybe a vacant lot was once a fairgrounds with heavy traffic and presumably lots of lost coins. It also clears up many misconceptions people have of treasure hunting and it's enthusiasts. Drawing on some of his own many adventures, the author draws the reader closer into this fascinating hobby. The text is laced with stories/examples that are entertaining and motivating as well as very practical.

I am just beginning my hobby with a metal detector. I purchased several books on treasure hunting and this is by far the best. It has a broad range of extremely useful information. By all means start with this book if you too are a beginner. Most of the other books I bought had a lot of fluff. This book has a ton of useful information and guidance.

A Must Read for New Treasure Hunters, October 14, 2005
I read this book from cover to cover and highly recommend it to anyone new to the hobby of treasure hunting and metal detecting. Chaplan knows his subject well and covers everything from how to get started to what to look out for while hunting and what to do with the objects that one finds.

The author leave no stone (or dirt!) unturned in the process. An excellent, all-around resource on the topic.

Best How-To Book on Metal Detector Treasure Hunting, February 28, 2005
As a long time friend of the author I feel as though I can share some interesting insights on this book. First, I'd like to say that he is a life-long treasure hunter, so this isn't some assignment from a publisher to a staff writer who does a cookbook one year and a woodworking book another year. This is Michael's "thing" and he's great and knowledgeable at it. He also brings to the table a scholars knowledge in anthroplogy, sociology and public health. When he explores for the artifacts of a past culture, he undestands what and why he is looking for something. When he finds something, he is able to put it in scientific perspective. Yet, he communicates simply and intelligently. The book can be as useful an easy reference for both the scholar and the person who just want's to find treasure. From creating a sifter, to logically approaching a site, it's all in there and easy to find. On the other hand, the book is also a great read from cover to cover. He's been a legend in treasure hunting many years, and this edition was eagerly awaited by many in the field. A must have for everyone with an interest or involvement in this area

Michael Chaplan's personal treasure hunting motto is: "Anything can be anywhere." And, he proves it time after time in his book with a fascinating array of treasure hunting adventures searching for and finding lost treasures in New York City. Treasure consisting of old coins, hidden caches, historical relics, antique bottles, precious jewelry, and prehistoric Indian artifacts.

His theory is that America's urban areas have common treasure hunting zones, and that the rules for treasure hunting in New York City would apply to every other urban area. Of course this comes with some pretty unusual experiences. The chilling section where he's drawn into the strange world of urban voodoo, after finding a ritual object, is one of the book's many high points. As a writer, Michael Chaplan really has that special knack for bringing the reader along on his adventurous expeditions around town.

THE URBAN TREASURE HUNTER should be on every city dweller's reading list. It clearly demonstrates that you don't have to be in steamy far away places to find treasure, it's right there in your own hometown. The book has a very attractive layout and is well illustrated with photos of interesting treasure finds, easy to understand diagrams, and useful charts. It's also quite apparent that the author has thoroughly explored the intriguing history of New York, a once small seaport grown into a great city, and then a metal detector became his time machine. Highly recommended, even for armchair adventurers. An excellent read. Get ready to put on your Indiana Jones hat!

As a geologist, I found his descriptions of locations and of his methods, to be clear, comprehensible, and pleasing to read. One interested in hunting for treasure in urban areas could not help but have one's searches enhanced by use of this text.

The best place to start, July 5, 2008
This is the book I used when I got started reloading about 10 years ago, and this book gave me just what I needed. When I first got the itch to load my own ammunition, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and terminology involved in this fascinating field/hobby. It was very difficult to take all the individual pieces of information that I had and form it into an understandable process. I was snowed in under a blizzard of data that I was piecing together through chat rooms and web sites. Everyone was very helpful - basically shooters are the most helpful people I know - but still I was just getting fragments without a solid, complete overview. Phrases like "roll crimp", "seating and sizer dies," and "headspace" came at me in a blizzard. I could look up each phrase, understand each one as a piece, but still the whole picture was fuzzy. In essence, that is what this book will do for you: turn it all into a coherent, linear whole. The writing is very solid and clear, the illustrations are well done and helpful, and the information is very complete. After reading this book, the entire process made sense to me, and more importantly, I was fully warned about the does and don'ts of the reloading world. The coverage is very complete. Primers, powders, bullets and cases are explained with regard to nomenclature and history. All necessary tools and accessories are discussed and explained. This is just a great book. It won't make you an expert (only actual reloading for years will do that), but it will put you on the right road if you wish to become one. --Mykal Banta

Information you'll find nowhere else, April 16, 2009
I've been reloading for about 15 years for everything from practical pistol to NRA highpower, hunting loads for military surplus guns and everything in between. I have the reloading manuals put out by reloading equipment manufacturers (such as Lyman and Lee) as well as those put out by powder and bullet manufacturers (e.g. Speer, Accurate). So compared to a beginner, I am a fairly advanced reloader. Nevertheless, I always want to know more, get new ideas, and so forth.

This book is comprehensive in that it puts forth a great deal of information relevant to reloading rifle, pistol and shotgun. But it doesn't just cover the basics -- it also goes into a great deal of depth on subjects not covered in other reloading manuals.

One example is one of the most perplexing questions facing a new handloader: when the powder manufacturer gives a particular "starting" and "maximum" load for a given bullet weight, and the bullet manufacturer gives different information ... whose do you use?

This book also describes practically every imaginable piece of equipment you might want, goes into important detail about concepts such as "headspace" and includes specific advice for handloading for different purposes such as big game hunting or varminting.

I recommend this book highly for both beginning and experienced reloaders. For beginners, it will allow you to start with a level of knowledge that would ordinarily take years to acquire. For more experienced reloaders, it gives valuable information on the peculiarities of some of the new cartridges and bullet offerings.

This book is well worth its price and then some -- it belongs on your bookshelf if you are considering reloading.

This book came highly recommended by members of a forum on reloading. I was not disappointed. I will recommend it myself. The book covers the bases and is easy to read. You will need to add other books to your library, ( such as load data for specific calibers ) but this is a very good place to start.

Decent book, but still not rudimentary enough, February 13, 2010
Why do I give this book 4 stars, but still give a critical statement about it in the title of my review. Well, for starters, this book is written in magazine style as I call it. The author typically puts out a lot of information in the style of a magazine article. What this means is that as problems crop up, you are ushered to a purchasable solution at your local store. Why is this NOT a good writing style, because it costs you unnecessary money and shows a gross lack of thought and research on the part of the author. It is almost like the author did a lot of research, but has not had a lot of practical experience on the subject that he writes about.

What I did not like about the book at hand was that it recommended full length resizing of the cartridge casing (fine if you are using it in an automatic rifle, NOT necessary at all if you are using a bolt action rifle). Full length resizing stresses the cartridge too much, compared to neck sizing it. This leads to premature cartridge casing failure (if you do not periodically ANNEAL the cartridge case neck) Annealing is NEVER mentioned in the book. What the author recommends is full length cartridge case resizing, no annealing, inspect casing for damage, discard damaged (which could have been prevented by ANNEALING). Thanks, more stuff to BUY. Us old guys neck size cartridges and anneal them every 4th or 5th loading to preserve our brass. BUY is a word used by marketing driven magazine writers, NOT old reloaders who know their stuff. Further more, Once a cartridge is fired in a rifle it has had its headspace perfectly adjusted for that gun. Just neck size it and periodically anneal it by standing the cases up in a pan of water and heating the neck red hot before knocking them over. Then deprime, neck size, reprime and reload them. Cases can last a lot longer and shoot a lot more accurately if this procedure (not mentioned in the book) is followed.

In the books defense, it is a decent read and will give you a lot of good information about reloading your own bullets.

Now I believe over the years the editor of this book has changed. I have a 6th edition. Chapters in the book are written by different authors, however, the editors did a wonderful job of putting together information that will make you feel a lot more confident about reloading.

The book covers everything from casting bullets, to the differences of powders. And since it is not about just one companies products, suggestions like the homemade powder dipper, abound. It also explains such facts as why working out your own loads for your own guns will give you better accuracy. And gives an in-depth look at how to tell if a bullet case is bad and shouldn't be used. And it is much more readable than a manual.

I also recommend getting a copy of Learn Handgun & Rifle Reloading in Under 41 Minutes: 2007 Edition. This is the only video I've found that covers every step in the reloading process, so you can see what the manuals are talking about. With both the book and the video you'll not only understand what you are doing but know exactly how to do it.

I had no knowledge about reloading until I got this book. I was planning on loading my own cartridges since my vintage P08 Parabellum pistol is rather picky when it comes to ammunition, but I had no idea how much is involved. This book gave me a good basic education in the field of reloading and is easy enough to read that even the newcomer can understand it. I highly recommend it.

I read the ABC's of reloading to learn about reloading shotshells and pistol ammunition. It is a great book, well written with lots of info and great pictures. I will read it again and again, and it will be used as a reference book as well. This book is a must have for anyone starting to reload, or as a reference for anyone who has reloaded for years. This is truly the bible of reloading.

The Author served as reloading expert for the NRA for years. The book is written with a "safety first" format. The author keeps newbies out of trouble with pictures of reloading gone bad.

This book will save you a lot of grief, by learning from others mistakes, rather than your own.
